How to enable or disable Dr Watson in the Windows operating systems

If you’re familiar with the Windows Operating System, you should know about the Dr. Watson. However, you may disable or enable this Dr. Watson if you don’t want it in the Computer. If you modify the registry incorrectly, some serious problems might occur and these issues might require reinstalling the Operating System. Therefore, ensure that you follow the steps carefully. At the same time, if you want to take a backup of the Registry, you can take if before modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs or whenever you want.

How to disable Dr. Watson
1. Go to Start Menu, choose Run then type “regedit.exe” in the Run command box and then click on OK. Instead, you can press Windows Key and R Key simultaneously to get the Run Command Window.
2. Then navigate to the following Registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug
Remember, the following first two steps are only optional, you can use them if you want to restore the default use of Dr. Watson.
3. Click the AeDebug key, and then click Export Registry File on the Registry menu.
4. Thereafter, click the AeDebug key and then click on Export Registry File on the Registry menu.
5. Then, enter a name and location for the saved registry file.
6. Then, click on Save.
7. Now, delete the AeDebug Key.
AeDebug Key in Windows has the registry entries for debugger programs. The Dr. Watson program is installed by default in the Windows and is configured in order to run when an application error occurs with the Data Value of 1 for the Auto Value. Look at the Default values
Value Name = Auto
Type = String (REG_SZ)
Data Value = 1 or 0. (Default is 1)


Value Name = Debugger
Type = String (REG_SZ)
Data Value = drwtsn32 -p %ld -e %ld -g


Remember that the data value (drwtsn32 -p %ld -e %ld -g) is specific to Dr. Watson. Alternative debuggers will have their own values and parameters.
How to enable Dr. Watson
1. We’ve discussed the steps to disable the Dr. Watson in the Computer.
2. Now, we have given the steps to enable Dr. Watson.
3. Go to Start Menu, choose Run then type “drwtsn32 -i” in the Run command box and then click on OK. Instead, you can press Windows Key and R Key simultaneously to get the Run Command Window.
4. Thereafter, double click on the .reg files you’ve created in the above provided steps.
5. That’s it.
6. You’ve enabled the Dr. Watson.
