World Day: The next generation of internet comes true from Bing IPv6

IANA, the international body responsible for distributing internet address has completed its final allocation of IPv4 addresses. The IPv4 has been the primary communication protocol for the internet for more than 20 years. This final allocation marks the end of an era to the extent the brief history of the internet that can be categorized this way. This considers the rapid proliferation of personal computers, smartphones, networked appliance and other connected devices around the world as four billion IPv4 addresses have been already exhausted.
In order to outline a clear path of the next generation Internet Protocol, IPv6, including Microsoft most of the major technology companies have been working behind the screen for years. Although the complete migration will take years, the vast majority of people will never notice the transition. Microsoft has worked as a member of Internet Society (ISOC) – and more generally the Internet community – to invest in and ensure that there is a seamless transition from IPv4 to IPv6.

On June 8, Bing will enable world-wide IPv6 connectivity to for the purpose of a one-day test. If you’ve the IPv6 Internet Capabilities, you will be able to access this new method of connectivity automatically.

However, this requires both a device that supports IPv6 and support from the internet provider. The IPv4 traffic will continue to connect to Bing without any change. In fact, most of the Bing users can’t even notice the transition. Besides, Microsoft has been working towards the promise of a smooth and prudent transition and the teams across the company have been readying for Bings and services to support IPv6. As you know most of the Microsoft products like Windows and Windows Server have had the robust IPv6 support for years. The number of addresses available under IPv6 is more than 300 trillion trillion trillion. This is the extreme step in the multi-year process to shepherd in a new internet era.
