Tips: How to create a new Failover Cluster

You can create a cluster when you’re done on the perfect research and plan for implementation of the Failover clusters. The Cluster Administrator of the Administrative Tools folder is used to create and manage the Failover clusters.

If you’re going to create a new Failover cluster, follow the following steps.

(Note that the first three steps must be performed on all nodes that will be part of the Failover cluster.)

1.    First, it is required to open Windows Server 2008 Server Manager from the Administrative Tools folder.
2.    Now, it is required to choose Features in the left pane and click Add Features in the right pane.
3.    After that, you can select Failover Clustering from the left pane and click on Next.
4.    Then, you can open the Failover Cluster Management from the Administrative Tools folder.
5.    Now, in the centre pane, it is required to click Validate A Configuration from the Management section.
6.    Then, it is required to enter the network name of the each node on the first screen of Validate A Configuration from the Management section.

7.    Now, it is required to select all of the nodes that are available to ensure that your testing validation is as accurate as possible.
8.    After that, click Next to view the Testing Options page. Make sure that you’re running all the tests to test your configuration.
9.    If you are running the validation process of failing a previous validation, you can run only the tests that were not successful earlier.
10.    Then, you can verify the performed test by clicking Next.
11.    After finishing the tests, you can get a summary page that will indicate if they’re successful and suitable to use as a Failover cluster.
12.    Then, click Finish to end the Validate A Configuration Wizard.
13.    If you find any errors, it is required to fix them. Otherwize, you can click Create A Cluster in the Failover Cluster Management window.
14.    Make sure that you’re entering the names of the nodes when the Create Cluster Wizard starts.
15.    These should be the same nodes you entered previously during the validation process.
16.    Now, it is required to click Next to proceed to the Access Point For Administering The Cluster page. On this page you need to enter the cluster name and IP address that will be used to identify and administer the cluster once it is created.
17.    The cluster name and IP address will be the virtual name registered in DNS and will be used to connect and manage the cluster itself.
18.    You can find this information different than the name and IP address that will be used by clients to connect to the clustered applications.
19.    After that, click Next for validating the settings and proceed to the Confirmation page.
20.    If not, you can click the Previous to go back and change the settings.
21.    Otherwise, click Next to proceed to the cluster creation page. At the completion of the cluster creation process, the Summary page will show you the results.
22.    If you find no errors, it means that the cluster was successfully formed.
23.    If there were any errors, click the View Report button to get details.
24.    Then, it is required to click Finish to exit the wizard.
25.    That’s it. Done successfully!
